Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription injectable treatment that relaxes the dynamic muscles that cause certain wrinkles and lines in the face and neck area. Botox is made from a purified form of botulinum toxin A, a neuromodulator. Health care providers and aestheticians have used Botox to treat wrinkles and lines since 2002.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by blocking the brain’s signals to dynamic muscles in your face. Dynamic muscles are the ones you use to make extreme facial expressions, such as:

  • Frowning
  • Squinting
  • Wrinkling your nose
  • Raising your eyebrows

When the muscle stops getting the signal to move, it relaxes. The skin above the muscle relaxes, too. Since the skin is no longer being pressed together in extreme expressions, the wrinkles that the expressions caused smooth out.

You can use Botox to erase:

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Eleven (i.e., frown) lines
  • Bunny lines (at the bridge of the nose)
  • Crow’s feet (i.e., wrinkles at eye corners)

Botox may also be used for specialized purposes, such as erasing wrinkles on the neck, softening a square jaw, or reducing excessive perspiration.

Will I look natural after Botox?

Your Femhealth Group, LLC provider uses just enough Botox to quiet down your dynamic muscles but not enough to “freeze” them. You can still make natural and attractive expressions that convey your emotions. However, you won’t be able to press your skin into the kinds of folds that could create wrinkles or creases.

How long does Botox take to work?

Each individual responds differently to Botox. You may notice your skin smoothing out and relaxing within 24 hours. It may take up to two weeks to see your full and final results.

How long does Botox last?

Your Botox treatment lasts anywhere from three to four months. The Femhealth Group, LLC team can schedule your follow-up appointment in advance, so you don’t have to worry about your wrinkles and lines re-forming before your next Botox treatment.

Does Botox have side effects?

As with any treatment, side effects may occur with Botox. However, most side effects are minor and short-lived, such as a slight swelling at the injection sites.
